Learn more about how to delve deep into yourself to come up with personal, original ideas, then develop those ideas into a complete visual statement, using a logical process, in these personalized tutoring sessions.
All levels welcome: beginners to advanced painters. Each artist is at a different point in their development. Therefore, any coaching or advice needs to take into account the experiences and background of the individual artist. Some people need or want to focus on technique, others want to learn more about ideas and personal motifs. And everyone needs individual, custom feedback that promotes growth and progress within the framework of a “safe space”, where the only criteria is a positive learning experience.
Students may focus on representational or more abstract painting.
I offer tutoring to artists who would like personal feedback. We are holding tutorials where I critique their existing and new work as it is painted, providing individualized observations, advice, and technique. Some people need to tighten up and some need to loosen up — it depends on the goals and temperament of the individual artist. Everyone needs a personal response to their ideas and motivations for making art. These have proven valuable to those who have participated in what is essentially ‘talk therapy’ + techniques.
Technique and Demos
I will occasionally demonstrate how to paint light filled representational landscape and figure paintings in oil and acrylic paint. We will learn how light and color mix together within a framework of abstraction to provide a suggestion of space. We will learn how to use a planned value and color structure, via the initial block-in of the painting from a photograph, then work over the entire piece to control values. We will seek expressiveness based on integrated abstract forms and texture that portray the emotional aspects of a scene. We will examine contemporary techniques to tell a visual story that will make your finished paintings immediately interesting for the viewer.
